    Purpose

    To reduce human related impacts on bears in high density grizzly bear habitat. Eliminating human entry and disturbance in specific areas prevents human / bear conflicts and provides areas where bears can pursue natural behavioral patterns and other social activities free from human disturbance. Types of restrictions include:

    Area Closures
    Trail Closures
    Minimum party size of four or more people
    Trail limited to daylight hours or to established trails


    Bear Management Areas

    A. Firehole

    Area includes Firehole Freight Road and Firehole Lake Road. This area is closed 10 March through the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. The Mary Mountain Trail from the Nez Perce Trailhead to Mary Lake is closed 10 March through 15 June. Through travel from the Canyon Trailhead to the Nez Perce Trailhead is not allowed, however, travel is allowed from the Canyon Trailhead to Mary Lake and back. Streamside use is allowed from the main road to a point one mile upstream along Nez Perce Creek.


    B. Richard's Pond

    Area is closed 10 March through the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. From the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend through 30 September, Duck Creek, from the park boundary upstream to the Campanula Creek / Richard's Creek fork, is open to streamside travel. The area upstream from Campanula Creek / Richard's Creek fork is closed from 10 March through 30 September.


    C. Gneiss Creek

    Area is closed 10 March through 30 June. From 01 July through 10 November, travel is allowed only on designated trails. Off trail travel is Prohibited!


    D. Gallatin

    From 01 May through 10 November, travel is allowed only on designated trails. Off trail travel is Prohibited! A minimum group size of four or more is recommended for hiking and camping.


    E. Blacktail

    Area is closed 10 March through 30 June.


    F. Washburn

    Area is closed 01 August through 10 November. From 10 March through 31 July, the area is open by special permit only.


    G. Antelope

    Area is closed 10 March through 10 November. The Dunraven Road and related turnouts are open. From 25 May through 10 November, foot travel is allowed on the Old Road Trail from Tower Falls Campground to the Buffalo Picnic Area.


    H. Mirror Plateau

    From 15 May through 10 November, the area is open to day use only. Overnight camping is permitted for a combined total of 14 use nights per summer at the Opal Creek and 5P7 undesignated campsites. Contact Lamar Ranger Station for permission to use the Opal Creek site. Contact the Lake Ranger Station for permission to use 5P7.


    I. Pelican Valley

    Area is closed 01 April through 03 July. From 04 July through 10 November, the area is open to Day Use Only between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm only.


    J. Clear Creek

    Area J1 - From 01 April through 10 August, travel is only allowed on the east shore from Nine-Mile Trailhead to Park Point. All other trails are closed and Off Trail Travel is Prohibited. On 11 August, all other campsites are open and off trail travel is permitted.

    Area J2 - From 01 April through 14 July, travel is only allowed on the East shore trail from Park Point to Beaverdam Creek. All other trails are closed and off trail travel is Prohibited! Open campsites are 5E3, 5E4, 5E6 and 5E8 - No travel away from campsite. All other campsites are closed. On 15 July, all campsites open and off trail travel is permitted.


    K. Lake Spawn

    From 15 May through 14 July, no off trail travel allowed and the trail between Cabin Creek and Outlet Creek is Closed. Open campsites are 7L5, 7L6, 7L7, 7M3, 7M4, 6A3 and 6B1 - No travel away from campsites. On 15 July all campsites open and off trial travel is permitted.


    L. Two Ocean

    From 10 March through 14 July and 22 August through 10 November, travel is allowed only on designated trails. Off trail travel is Prohibited! From 15 July through 21 August, a permit is required for persons wishing to travel away from designated trails. Contact the South Entrance Ranger Station for permit information.


    M. Riddle / Solution

    Area is closed 30 April through 14 July.


    N. Grant Village

    Campground opens 20 June or earlier if bear use of spawning fish is over prior to that time. If bears are still feeding on spawning fish after 20 June, the campground loops adjacent to the stream(s) will remain closed until bear activity ceases. Campground closes 16 October.


    O. Heart Lake

    Area is closed 01 April through 30 June.


    There may be other temporary closures due to bear activity. Check at any Ranger Station.
