All groomed roads open to the public at 8:00 am for winter activities (snowshoe, ski, snowcoach, snowmobile, etc.).
Please note that East, South and West entrances and roads are NOT OPEN 24 hours 7 days a week in winter. The East, South and West entrances and roads close in the evening to early morning for grooming.
Please be aware that the North Entrance is open 24 hours / 7 days a week, year round to normal vehicle travel.

Due to nightly road closures from 9:00 pm to 7:00 am, roads close at 9:00 pm the night before the days listed above. These dates are all weather-dependent.
Spring Opening Schedule for the Year 2007
Spring weather is unpredictable; roads may be closed temporarily by snow or other weather conditions. Snow tires or chains may be required. Weather and snow conditions permitting, tentative road opening dates for vehicles are:
North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana to Mammoth to Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana is open all year.

The scheduled opening dates in May are the earliest possible dates; some routes may actually open later. Please call: 307-344-7381 or check locally to verify openings tentatively scheduled throughout the month of May. Some roads will also open, as conditions allow, for Hiking, Spring Bicycle travel, roller blading and skate boarding possibly beginning somewhere between mid to the end of March.
Once an Entrance / Road opens, it is open 24 hours 7 days a week. Exceptions are caused by road construction, fires and weather related restrictions.

Autumn Closing Schedule for the Year 2007
The only park road that remains open to wheeled vehicles all year is the road from Gardiner, Montana at the North Park Entrance (at Gardiner, Montana) to Mammoth, Silver Gate & Cook City, Montana near the Northeast Park Entrance. Please Note, travel east of Cooke City, Montana is NOT POSSIBLE during the winter season.
Other roads close at 8:00 am on the following schedule:

The Park Service will normally allow individual non-motorized travel (snowshoe, ski, etc.) from the fall closing date until just before winter over snow vehicle travel begins. This activity is limited to the Mammoth to the West Entrance road.
The North Entrance road to Upper Mammoth Terrace and Mammoth, to Tower Junction, and to the Northeast Entrance remains open to wheeled vehicles year round. Snow tires and/or chains may be required.Please Note, that in winter, US Highway 212 (Beartooth Highway) is CLOSED east of Cooke City, Montana. It is open to east west travel in spring, summer and fall.

Spring
Early Spring Activities in Yellowstone are a great way to both see and enjoy the park. This time period allows the unique opportunity for non-motorized use of certain park roads. Bicycling, hiking, jogging, roller blades, roller skis, and similar means of non-motorized travel are permitted between the West Entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs ONLY from about mid March through the third Thursday in April. The opening date in March is weather dependent.
The East and South Entrances and roads are Not Open for these early spring activities. The road from Madison Junction to Old Faithful will Not Open for spring activities during this time. Please Note, there will be some administrative vehicles traveling the roads at this time. See the Biking Page for a map and more information. Summer
Park Areas, Entrances and Roads open on different dates. Detailed information is listed below and on the Calendar Page.
The Summer Season runs from approximately mid April to the beginning of November.

The season runs from approximately mid December to mid March.
The road from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana to the Northeast Entrance at Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana is open to wheeled vehicle use year round. Snow tires and/or chains may be required. Only over snow vehicles are allowed on other park roads.
Please Note, US Highway 212 (Beartooth Highway) east of Cooke City, Montana is CLOSED during the winter season.
